Following the work undertaken in the Master of Surgery thesis, Dr Lambers’ PhD examined the clinical and laboratory findings in rods used to treat hip fractures when they weaken and break inside the patient.

This study was one of the first papers that compared how often different models of rods used to treat hip fractures would break from use (called fatigue fracture). It found that a newer model of implant had a higher proportion of returned implants to the local retrieval laboratory, prompting further research into its performance. This implant had been identified in Dr Lambers’ earlier research as displaying atypical fracture surfaces and had a breakage rate higher than his team’s previously defined benchmark.
